Description |
| From writer/director Guillermo Arriaga comes THE BURNING PLAIN, a romantic mystery concerning a woman on the edge who takes an emotional journey back to the defining moment of her life. Oscar-winner Charlize Theron plays Sylvia, a stunning restaurant manager whose cool, professional demeanor masks the sexually charged storm inside. When a stranger from Mexico confronts her together with her mysterious past, Sylvia is launched into a journey throughout space and time this inextricably connects her to these disparate characters, all of whom are grappling together with their own romantic destinies. In Mexico, a young motherless girl, Maria (Tessa Ia), lives happily together with her father and his excellent friend until a tragic accident changes it all. In the New Mexico border town of Las Cruces, two teenagers, Mariana (Jennifer Lawrence) and Santiago (JD Pardo), locate love in the aftermath of their parents' sudden deaths. In an abandoned trailer, a housewife, Gina (Oscar-winner Kim Basinger), embarks on a passionate affair this will put Sylvia and the others on a collision course together with the explosive power of forbidden love. |

Slow Burn 2010-08-10 |
| By R. M. Silkey |
| Beating yourself up for mistakes you've made is all too frequent in the real world. Charlize Theron's portrayal of the unforgiven daughter is dead on in, "The Burning Plain." My only quip with this movie is that the pacing is somewhat slow. Perhaps this was done intentionally......maybe not! Regardless, I still found this movie engaging even though it is a bit choppy at the beginning with the time line changing back and forth without any sort of set up that it's going to happen. After about 20 minutes into the movie you do finally understand what they are doing. I believe the bigger question with this movie is: Does Theron's character need to forgive herself or have that come from an outside source? Her character is somewhat disturbed by her past as I don't want to give anything away concerning the plot. I felt that this movie, while not a masterpiece, does deserve some attention. I even felt strongly enough about the subject matter to add it to my collection. It would serve anyone interested in watching this to view it at least twice before considering adding it to your collection. There are several things I missed on my first viewing. This movie will not be everyone's cup of tea due to the timing, pace, and subject matter. However, I did find that subsequent viewings made me appreciate this movie for what it is.....a slow burn! |

These two women live a long dustance from each other and their illicit love affairs are way back in the past. GUILLERMO ARRIAGA !!!!! 2010-06-04 |
| By Aldo Bartolini (MEXICALI, BAJA. MEXICO) |
| GUILLERMO ARRIAGA (MEXICO) IS THE WRITER OF THE TRILOGY AMORES PERROS, 21 GRAMS AND BABEL ALL THREE DIRECTED BY THE WONDERFUL DIRECTOR GUILLERMO GONZALEZ INARRITU (MEXICO). THEY WERE THE PERFECT TEAM.(GUILLERMO ARRIAGA ALSO WROTE THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA WHICH TOMMY LEE JONES DIRECTED, GOOD MOVIE BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE TRILOGY) NEEDLESS TO SAY HE IS ONE OF THE FINEST WRITERS AROUND, UNFORTUNATELY HE AND DIRECTOR GUILLERMO GONZALEZ INARRITU HAD SOME DIFFERENCES AND PARTED WAYS. NOW GUILLERMO ARRIAGA GOES HIS OWN WAY AND DIRECTS HIS OWN SCRIPT, AND HE DOES A WONDERFUL JOB, GREAT DIRECTING, VERY PROFOUND CHARACTERS, COMPELLING STORY,CHARLIZE THERON AND THE ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL KIM BASINGER ARE PERFECT IN THEYRE ROLLS, POWERFUL DRAMA THAT WONT LEAVE YOU DEPRESSED. |
I've been waiting for a decent film about romance from a female POV. 2010-05-01 |
| By Anne Parker (ellensburg, was) |
This movie was unique after I'd been trammeling away in cinema in recent weeks with the same tired stereotypes of male protagonists.
Kim Basinger is a calm center of luminescence in every film she's in, eyes barely flickering with underplay, perhaps reflecting her own private anxieties. You will not get plastered on smiles, terrified grimaces, wrenching dichotomies on her face, and yet she will convey all of this.
Charlize Theron is a great genius here. We don't see a cougar in this sexually active female, no sex in the city titillations and stories for girlfriends. What we see, which I think is more common in the promiscuous, is a hungry, sad, inner desperation in her face. She exposes her body because she is wanting to heal her soul, but can't risk her soul so moves rapidly from man to man. I love that she doesn't show a callous containment or casual smugness in this character, nor does she play this woman as the "full of secrets" cliche. The story unfolds naturally.
The story is a mystery that weaves carefully. The story is interesting and the male supporting cast (how great to say those words) is very talented. Lovely cinematography varying from rain washed blue room to vast desert expanses reflect but do not dominate the interior landscapes of these women. |
