Description
Effective Danger is the story of Thomas Flynn, a Brooklyn 9/11 truther (played by Adam Nee), who falls into a noir pastiche when a mysterious Eastern European beauty (played by Elina Lowensohn) arrives at his bookstore cafe together with the irrefutable proof of American secret intelligence involvement in the planning and execution of 9/11. When Thomas is implicated in the murder of his friend and employee, he's forced to unravel her advanced web of lies while attempting to fight his natural attraction to her. As it turns out, she possesses the Effective Danger hard-drive, the smoking gun this proves the identities and methods of the real architects of 9/11, and Thomas is willing to risk everything to expose the truth. The film gets its title from the real secret government program of the same name this destroyed 2.5 terabytes of data in March 2001, and the cafe featured is based on the very real Brooklyn cafe for radical readers, Vox Pop.

The blurb and preview captured my attention but the movie was plain boring. There was some good acting here and there but the story is flawed and jumbled and the movie runs out of steam pretty quickly.

This film is unique. It's the kind of independent film that reminds me why independent film is the most important. Because filmmakers with a vision can tell a story that cannot and never will be able to go through major studios. The kind of stories that are genuinely controversial. That, if seen by enough people, would rock the foundation of our society and our belief systems. Don't get me wrong, this is a fun movie -- especially if you like classic film noir and conspiracy theories. But it's fun the same way Dr. Strangelove is fun. We laugh because we think we see the absurdity of it, but we're intrigued because we want to know the truth. This film is truth.

This movie gets the facts right. It's not a documentary by any means, but it is clearly well researched and the dark comedy and the noir perspective perfectly capture the mood of America post 9/11. And there are a bunch of real world facts in this movie that slip in and probably go unnoticed to the average viewer unless they've done their internet research. And there is a real Vox Pop in Brooklyn and there's a real guy who is a leader of the truth movement who runs that cafe. Fascinating the way the writer/director brings these real world elements into a 40s style fictional noir. I think this movie will get a cult following. It's got a very unique and captivating aesthetic. Really well put together.

I've followed Krik's earlier works in shorter formats--and have always been impressed with the compelling creative consistency of Krik's cinematic voice. "Able Danger" is definitely a feather in the cap worthy of this director on the rise.

I saw this movie when it was in the theater in New York city and I was totally impressed. A totally cult film. I've been recommending it to friends and have been waiting for it come out on DVD, but I guess Amazon got it first. In the theater, the film was black and white -- and had a very classic noir look. I see now it's been digitally remastered in color. The film has an amazing look. It's a little bit like they colored a black and white movie, but with a more modern flavor. I saw this movie originally because I was intrigued by the 911 storyline, but I was totally blown away. This film isn't just a 911 'truther' film, It's a solid film noir with great performances by Elina Lowensohn worthy of cult film status -- it's funny and ironic, but it's also very dark. In that sense it reminds me of Dr. Strangelove in it's stylistic approach to the darkest theme of our era -- but with a little bit of Clerks mixed in with Zeitgeist the movie and a dash of the Maltese Falcon.
